My images, merging sculpture and photography, explore issues of migration, fragmentation and place. They combine materials from various sources such as historical archives, architectural design, cultural artifacts and personal narrative.


I make drawings, and construct hand-made objects and environments in my studio – which are then enlarged and photographed with a large-format camera. The final photograph is the remaining document, as the structure is discarded after the image is made.
Originally from Detroit MI, Yamini Nayar currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
Yamini received her BFA in Photography from the RhodeIsland School of Design in 1999, and MFA in Photography and Related Media from the School of Visual Arts, NY in 2005.
Her work has been exhibited at the Queens Museum of Art, Bose Pacia Modern and the Studio Museum of Harlem. Awards and residencies include the Aaron Siskand Fellowship in 2004 and Chashama, NY…
