In 1994, Giovanne said that avant-garde is a myth of system. Yesterday, Lao Wu said that the biggest problem of contemporary art was that young people were happily jumping around while old people enjoyed spending their money.
Xu Tan was born in Wuhan, Hubei Province in 1957. In the early 1990s he joined the "Big Tail Elephant Group" in Guangzhou with Lin Yinlin, Chen Shaoxiong and Liang Juhui. The aim of this group is to develop critical strategies for negotiating the rapidly changing economic and cultural life in China.
Xu arrived carrying slides and a slide projector. He’s a Big Tail Elephant, one of four in a group known for their aggressive social criticism. An easy-going bear of a man with a ready laugh, he did not have the air of a determined faultfinder…
