“Julie Umerle paints in series that are often open ended. The paintings are organic: they crack, drip and split. Layers of paint are built up slowly, making use of gravity and an element of chance. Their dynamics reveal opposition and interplay between the vertical and the horizontal. Her paintings address issues of freedom and control in handling of paint and medium, yet reveal intervention and constant decision making on the part of the artist. The paintings are also about perception and call attention to the surface.”
“I work in series, exploring repetition and dissimilarity within each group of paintings. The series are often open-ended. The paintings crack, drip and split. Their dynamics reveal opposition and interplay between the vertical and the horizontal. The canvases are multi-layered and slowly worked.”
The recent paintings of Julie Umerle are inspired by her interest in chaos theory and fractals. She is interested in the discourse that the work establishes between artist’s intervention and chance. These paintings address issues of freedom and control in handling of paint and medium; but are also about perception and call attention to the surface. They reference nature and evoke rain, water and air; they invite contemplation and individual response. Her paintings are multi-layered, and slowly worked.

Furthermore, we are as haunted by the failures of utopian enterprise as we are inspired by the desire to repair the failed and build the new...

James Rosenquist. Painting Below Zero: Notes on a Life in Art.
“Frank, funny, truthful, ironic and in every way an entertaining account of one major American artist’s involvement in an art movement that interests everyone–and, more than that, of his own character. Jim Rosenquist is a true American original and his book ought to be read by anyone who wants to understand the last half-century of his country’s visual culture, high, low, and in between.” –Robert Hughes, amazon
