Since completing her degree at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, she has worked in a wide range of media, including oil painting, video and photography, often engaging themes of sexuality and gender as well as the blurred boundary between public and private. Her work has been exhibited at numerous museums, most notably at the International Center of Photography and the Asia Society in New York, the Tate Modern in London and the Pompidou Center in Paris…

Cui Xiuwen concealed a video camera to record the activities of young women in the ladies’ room of a Beijing karaoke club. She captures them unaware in candid moments as they inspect themselves in the mirror and prepare to return to the nightclub. The video explores the ambiguous status of the young women who frequent nightclubs and karaoke bars, who may be available not only for sitting or singing with clients but also for a range of sexual services…
