De tendens om onszelf en het universum te willen regisseren en perfectioneren is een van mijn grote fascinaties en vormt de afgelopen jaren de thematiek van mijn werk. In een tijd waarin we door genetische manipulatie en plastische chirurgie steeds meer macht menen te hebben over ‘moeder natuur’, worden we desondanks geconfronteerd met wat we eigenlijk zijn; dieren met animale driften. Met fysieke en psychische perfectie hoog in het vaandel willen we ons distantiëren van onze basale emoties. Met een kritische knipoog wil ik laten zien dat dit weinig kans van slagen heeft…
The tendency to want to control and perfect oneself and the universe is one
of Anya Janssen’s major fascinations and has been a constant theme in her
work over recent years.In a time in which,with recourse to genetic
manipulation and plastic surgery,we believe that we have ever increasing
power over "mother nature",we are nonetheless confronted by what we
really are: monsters with animal urges.As civilised,rational beings,we want
to distance ourselves from our basal emotions.In taking a sideways glance
at this aspiration,janssen attempts to show that it is probably doomed to fail…
Anya Janssen is bekend geworden met vaak grote, figuratieve doeken ‘in soft?focus’. Zij schildert met zeer droge verf, zonder medium en laag?over laag. Op deze manier ontstaat een onscherpte die zowel figuur als achtergrond kenmerkt en met elkaar verbindt op subtiele wijze. Deze sterke sfumato zorgt niet alleen voor een dromerige?sfeer in haar schilderijen maar heeft vooral betrekking op de inhoud van het werk. Deze techniek belichaamt Janssens thematische?interesse in de vervaging van grenzen tussen cultuur en natuur, verschillende staten van zijn en de scheiding tussen het innerlijke leven van mensen en hun omgeving.
